Chiari has been affecting our family for years but we didn't know what it was until Kendra was finally diagnosed in 2012. She suffered from daily headaches, dizziness, stomach aches, and many more problems related to Chiari. Owen was diagnosed around the same time and eventually so were Ali and Gage. All four of them have had decompression surgery and are feeling much better but none of them are completely free from all symptoms. Alexandra has been diagnosed with a 3mm herniation but it hasn't yet been determined when or if she will need surgery as well.

  The American Syringomyelia and Chiari Alliance Project, ASAP, is an organization that is committed to helping fund research, conferences, outreach phone seminars, patient education materials, support groups and much more.

   Much more research needs to be done! There is not nearly enough funding for research, and there is no research to show which kind of brain surgery is the most effective for which patients. Surgery helps many, but many others find no relief or relief for a short time only to find symptoms returning.  Physicians are doing all they can, but without more research to guide them, it becomes a trial and error process.  There is very little federal funding for these disorders, and ASAP, patients, families, and friends are working together to raise the funds necessary for this research. These are still thought to be rare conditions, but as more MRI’s arebeing performed, they are being diagnosed more frequently. Please join us for the ASAP walk on the Pennsy Trail in Greenfield, Indiana on May 24th.   Registration will be at Hometown Pizza at 12 W Main St.  Registration begins at 10am, the walk will begin at 11am.  Each walker that raises at least $30 will receive a t-shirt. Join us after the walk for unlimited pizza and drinks for $5/person at Hometown Pizza.
